Day 1: Arrival & Settle In

Sunset at Kamaole beaches in Kihei, Maui

After arriving in Maui, it’s time to settle into your accommodation. We recommend Kihei as a central hub – it’s close to beaches, restaurants, and easy access to the rest of the island.

If you’re coming from the North American mainland, you’ll most likely arrive in the afternoon or evening. Take your time settling in – the jet lag is real!

Spend your first afternoon and evening taking it easy: stroll along one of the Kamaole beaches, browse shops in town, and stop into a grocery store to pick up essentials. Kihei is famous for its sunsets, and we try to never miss one when we visit. Grab a beach chair and head to the beach for a beautiful sunset.

And, if you arrive late in the evening, it’s totally acceptable to grab an easy dinner and call it a day. We love Paia Fish Market – and you’ll want to go back a second time, so it makes sense to stop in on night one.

Day 2: Road to Hana Adventure

Waiʻanapanapa Beach along the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a must-do on any one-week Maui adventure – it’s full of short hikes, scenic waterfalls, roadside stops, and beautiful lush terrain vastly different from the rest of the island.

I recommend doing the Road to Hana early in your trip, especially if you’re coming from the North American mainland – jet lag will have you waking early, perfect for a head start on traffic heading to Hana.

The drive to Hana is scenic but slow, with many waterfalls, roadside hikes, and lookout points you’ll want to stop at along the way. Starting early ensures you won’t feel rushed and can enjoy everything the Road to Hana has to offer. Pack snacks and drinks – though there are some great roadside stops along the way (see below).

It’s very common to drive out-and-back to and from Hana – you don’t need to complete the full loop if time or energy is limited.

We recommend purchasing the Shaka Guide for a Road to Hana adventure. This fully guided audio tour syncs with your phone’s GPS for a fully immersed experience.

Some of our favorite places to stop along the Road to Hana include:

    • Jaws Country Store: Located in Haiku, this is a great place to grab breakfast. Delicious breakfast burritos and acai bowls.
    • Twin Falls: Easy waterfall hike, lovely swim, and a great first stop. Arrive early for easier parking.
    • Painted Forest: Beautiful eucalyptus trees and a quiet, peaceful walk. A great way to stretch your legs.
    • Coconut Glen’s: Delicious vegan ice cream in a range of flavors, made from coconuts.
    • Wai’anapanapa State Park: Black sand beaches, lava formations, and caves (reserve up to 30 days in advance).
    • Hana: You’re driving the road to Hana, after all! Hana is a sleepy town, but we love stopping at Hana Bay Beach Park and Hasegawa General Store for a taste of local life.

On your return, consider stopping in Paia, a laid-back town with shops and cafes. Exhausted from a full day of driving? No worries – we’ve got Paia scheduled later in the week, too.

Day 3: Upcountry & Haleakala Sunset (or Sunrise)

No 7-day Maui itinerary is complete without a visit to Haleakala crater

Just like the Road to Hana, we think a week on Maui isn’t complete without visiting Haleakala National Park, and if possible, watching the sunset or sunrise from the summit. A Haleakala adventure pairs well with a visit to upcountry Maui – the elevated, inland section of the island.

For this day trip, be sure to pack layers – it can get quite cool at the summit, especially if you’re headed there for sunrise or sunset.

    Option 1: Haleakala Sunrise

Lots of people recommend Haleakala at sunrise, and while we think it’s a great option, we also realize that many travelers to Maui like sleeping until reasonable hours. Depending on where you’re staying, a Haleakala summit sunrise could require waking at 3am.

If you like the idea of this adventure, go for it! But be sure to book ahead (requires reservation).

If you opt for a Haleakala sunrise, you can wander upcountry afterward. Start in Kula – we recommend Grandma’s Coffee House or Kula Bistro for breakfast. Then make your way through Kula, down the mountain, toward Makawao. This charming town has great shops and cafes, perfect to grab lunch before heading back to your home base for a well-earned nap.

    Option 2: Haleakala Sunset

If you like a more relaxed pace – or if sunrise bookings are full – head to Haleakala for sunset. It’s equally breathtaking, and you can pack a cooler for a picnic dinner while you wait for the sunset.

For this option, I recommend heading to Makawao around lunchtime. Have lunch, and if you get into town early enough, grab some malasadas at Komoda Store and Bakery. Rodeo General Store is great for browsing local items, and there are a number of small boutiques and galleries in town to wander as well.

From there, head toward Kula to explore upcountry farms or lavender fields. If you’re planning to bring a picnic dinner for the sunset, you can stock your cooler along the way, or pack it earlier in the day before you head out.

Day 4: Hoapili Trail & South Maui Beaches

Beautiful golden sand beaches in Wailea, Maui

After a couple of days of heavier driving, it’s time to slow down and soak up the sun while exploring South Maui – from Kihei to Wailea and beyond.

    Hoapili Trail

Kick off your day with a scenic hike along lava formations and coastline at the southern end of Maui. The Hoapili Trail is easy to moderate, perfect for travelers who want activity without extreme difficulty. It’s one of our favorite Maui coastal hikes.

This trail is fully exposed, so it can get hot in the middle of the day. To beat the heat, start your hike in the morning, then head to Wailea and Kihei for some beach time in the afternoon. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes – you’ll be rewarded with stunning coastal views that feel like a hidden side of Maui.

    South Maui Beaches

After your morning hike, continue north along South Maui’s stunning coastline. You can easily choose a single beach for a relaxing afternoon, or plan a little beach hopping to see more of the area:

Start at Makena State Park, where dramatic lava rock meets expansive sandy beaches. Waves can be stronger here than at other spots, so check conditions before heading in.

Next, visit Wailea, known for calm, sandy beaches perfect for swimming, gentle coastal walks, or simply soaking up the resort-side scenery.

Finally, make your way to Kihei, where Kamaole I, II, or III offer soft sand, calm waters, and a perfect spot to unwind as the afternoon winds down.

Following this south-to-north progression lets you enjoy a full beach day without backtracking – and experience some of the best coastline South Maui has to offer.

    Day 5: West Maui Loop

The serene 'Ohai Trail along the West Maui loop

Today, it’s time to explore scenic West Maui, where beautiful swimming beaches, easy coastal walks, and top snorkeling spots await. Whether you’re up for adventure or a more relaxed loop, West Maui has something for every pace.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can tackle the full West Maui Loop – a scenic drive with far fewer crowds than the famous Road to Hana. While most of the route is highway, the northern section narrows to a single lane hugging the coastline. Take your time and drive carefully!

If a full loop feels like too much, don’t worry – there’s still plenty to see and do. Here are some of our favorite stops in West Maui:

    1. Ma‘alaea Harbor: Stop here for a quick stroll along the water, browse a few local shops, or grab a treat (we love the ice cream sandwiches from Hula Cookies).
    2. Olowalu: Stretch your legs at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop and the adjacent farm market, perfect for a morning snack or coffee break.
    3. Kaanapali Beach: One of Maui’s most iconic beaches. Check out Whaler’s Village for shops and lunch – Monkeypod Kitchen is our favorite. Afterward, explore Black Rock, a great spot for snorkeling or just watching the waves crash dramatically against the lava rock.
    4. Honolua Bay: A world-class snorkeling spot with vibrant marine life. Even if you’re not snorkeling, the viewpoint is gorgeous for photos and a short walk.
    5. Nakalele Blowhole: Witness the power of nature as ocean water shoots dramatically through a lava tube. There’s a short, rocky hike down reach the blowhole, so wear sturdy shoes.
    6. Ohai Trail: For a soft adventure bonus, take this short coastal hike for dramatic views of the northern shoreline.

From here, you have two options:

    • Turn back south and return the way you came, enjoying additional stops along the way, or
    • Complete the full loop of West Maui, navigating the narrow, cliffside single-lane section for an added thrill and more secluded scenery.

No matter what you choose, this day gives you a mix of driving, coastal exploration, snorkeling, and easy hiking – perfect for a West Maui adventure without feeling rushed.

Day 6: Ocean Excursion – Molokini Snorkeling, Whale Watching, or Lanai Day Trip

Today is all about getting out on the water! Maui offers incredible ocean adventures, whether you want to snorkel, watch whales, or explore a neighboring island. Choose one of the following options:

    Molokini Crater Snorkeling

Crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life make Molokini Crater ideal for snorkeling. Perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a low-impact soft adventure. Check out tour options to Molokini.

    Whale Watching (winter only)

During whale season, you can opt for a whale watching tour to get up close to humpback whales wintering in Maui’s channels. Seeing these majestic creatures breach and play in the ocean is unforgettable. Check out whale watching options on Maui.

    Ferry to Lanai

For a longer ocean excursion, consider a day trip to Lanai. From Maui, you can take a ferry to explore Lanai’s secluded beaches beautiful hikes. This is a great option for travelers who want a mix of adventure, nature, and a less crowded island experience.

Tips for Your Day on the Water

    • Book tours in advance: Whale watching tours especially can fill up fast.
    • Bring a waterproof camera to capture underwater photos or wildlife encounters.
    • Check the weather: High winds or waves can cancel tours.

Day 7: Iao Valley & Paia

Finish your 7-day Maui visit with a blend of lush scenery, great food, and relaxing beaches. This final day combines a gentle morning adventure with plenty of time to unwind on the North Shore.

Leaving on Day 7? This day is planned intentionally to end the afternoon in Paia, conveniently located near the airport.

    Iao Valley

Start your day in the lush, green Iao Valley – an easy, scenic stop with short paved trails, rainforest views, and one of the most iconic landscapes on the island. Most visits take under an hour, making it a perfect low-effort, high-reward way to ease into your day. Want to stay longer? The park has beautiful hikes and streams to explore further.

    Paia Town

After exploring Iao, head to Paia for lunch and wandering. This small town has a vibrant, tourist-friendly energy with boutique shops, galleries, cafes, and plenty of spots to grab a bite. It’s an ideal place to browse, people-watch, and soak in the North Shore vibe.

    Beaches

Wrap up your trip on one of Paia’s beautiful beaches, known for their golden sand and dramatic views toward the West Maui Mountains.

    • Baldwin Beach: A wide, sandy stretch with lifeguards and facilities – great for swimming, sunbathing, or a long shoreline walk.
    • Baby Beach: Just west of Baldwin, this sheltered cove is protected by an offshore reef, creating calm, pool-like water perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Despite the name, it’s a favorite for adults thanks to its peaceful, protected feel. Bonus: we always spot turtles here.

Take this final day slow – enjoy the scenery, savor your last beach time, and reflect on a week of adventure before wrapping up your Maui trip.
